Drivers Cup USA Racing Series

The 2008 Drivers Cup USA Racing Series, featuring Porsche 996 and 997 GT3 Cup Cars, is a racing series dedicated to providing a safe racing environment for all participants where on race weekends drivers compete on venues while racing …On Track with Competence.

The Series will be run in conjunction with the Porsche Owners Club, Porsche Club of America, and other sanctioned amateur motorsport events in 2008 (refer to 2008 Schedule) throughout the United States.


Eligible Cars
The spirit of the Series is to keep the cars reasonably equal and minimize the number of permissible changes. Any change not specifically authorized is prohibited. Violations are subject to penalties or exclusion. “Stock” means that the parts are unmodified and as originally supplied from Porsche.


The eligible model year cars are as listed below:

  • Porsche GT3 Cup Cars
  • Body Style 996 and 997
  • 996 GT3 Cup cars run Group A (Model Years 2000-2005)
  • 997 GT3 Cup cars run Group B (Model Years 2005-2007)
  • 997 GT3 Cup cars run Group C (Model Year 2008)


Entrant/Participant/Driver Requirements
Entrant/Participant/Driver are solely responsible for assuring their car is technically safe and meets compliance to all safety issues by the sanctioning bodies for participation in a competitive weekend driving/racing event. Competent Motorsport, LLC is not responsible for the technical safety of any car participating in the Drivers Cup USA Racing Series.


Eligibility
The Drivers Cup USA Racing Series is open to amateur and Club drivers only. Competent Motorsport, LLC reserves the right, in its sole discretion to reject any driver deemed to be a “professional driver”.

A driver must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Proof of current physical examination (within 3 months of Series commencement)
  • Current racing drivers license sanctioned by POC/PCA or equivalent sanctioning body
  • Competent Motorsport, LLC Limited License ($200 per season)
  • Competent Motorsport, LLC will determine eligibility of drivers at it’s sole discretion


Safety Equipment
All Drivers Cup USA Racing Series drivers are required to wear a Hans System at all sanctioned events.

Driver safety equipment must meet the code of the sanctioning body of the event.


13/13 Policy
During the Drivers Cup USA Racing Series the 13/13 policy and penalty will be used as a “deterrent”, making it a penalty for an “on-track” contact and not penalizing the driver for an “off-track” single contact incident. With Drivers Cup USA Racing Series personnel at the black flag station, we will have the necessary conversation to stop any inappropriate action “off the track”. For any “off-track” incidents that occur, a notation will be entered into the driver’s Series logbook accordingly. Continuing to engage in “off-track” incidents will result in the driver not being able to compete in the Series until reinstated by the Series Race Steward.


Technical Specification Overview
Below are the specifications for the Drivers Cup USA Racing Series, featuring Porsche 996 and 997 GT3 Cup Cars, presented by Competent Motorsport, LLC. These specifications are published in order for competitors to prepare their car for the Series. Competent Motorsport, LLC does not expect to make substantial changes to these specifications, but reserves the right to do so.

“Stock” means that the parts are unmodified and as originally supplied from Porsche. Questions regarding parts, competitors should contact Porsche Motorsport North America.

Camber and tire setting requirements:
Camber settings are set by Yokohama Tire. Competitors must not exceed maximum recommended settings at any time during event. If found to run greater camber setting than Yokohama Tire recommends at any given track, will result in a disqualification/forfeiture of results.It is the responsibility of competitors to check accepted camber settings for each track the series participates at.

Three dry sets per weekend MAX – tires may be marked by Officials at the event and only those marked tires (or wets) may be used in any official session
Unless a wet start is declared, must start on one of the two sets of dry tires.
Wet tires limited only by availability. May be pre-ordered and mounted – but must be inspected and marked each race.
Tire pressure is up to competitor, however, competitors are advised to run within Yokohama recommendations
Tire warmers are prohibited
Grooving of dry or wet tires is prohibited
Chemical treatment of tires is prohibited
Engine Engine MUST be stock
Engine Upgrades:
996 2000 thru 2002 – PMNA available engine replacement to 2005
996 2003 – PMNA available engine upgrade
996 2004 thru 2005 must run stock
997 2005 thru 2007 must run stock

Data collection permitted, however:
Sensors limited to those listed in Porsche Service Manual: one wheel speed sensor per wheel; one steering position sensor; one gear position sensor, one gear shift lever only; one rpm sensor; one lateral and one longitudinal accelerometer; lap trigger.
All other sensors are prohibited, including, but not limited to, GPS sensors; shock pots.
Wireless (radio or IR) transmission of data to or from the car is prohibited.
Suspension May be adjusted within existing tolerances
All original parts must be retained
Max thickness of shims on control arms are:
996 Front axle: 20 mm; 996 Rear axle: 5 mm
997 Front axle: 13 mm; 997 Rear axle: 10 mm
Diagonal link mounting points on the front control arms must be retained at the factory position - shortest wheel base or middle position is not permitted
Shocks - Any shock that fits in stock position
- No modifications of the mounting points or mounts permitted
- Limited to two-way adjustment
Anti-Roll Bars - Only stock anti-roll bars permitted
- May be disconnected but no parts may be removed
- May be adjusted using given range of adjustment holes
Springs 996 Stock 2000 thru 2005 specifications (with permitted spring rates)
997 Stock 2005 thru 2007 specifications (with permitted spring rates)
Wheels - Stock three-piece BBS center lock wheels only. BBS forged aluminum centers with center lock wheels of the same wheel size width and offset that are designed and intended for “racing use only”.
- All wheels must be clearly and permanently marked (to avoid confusion when mounting tires)
Ride Height - 996 - 85 mm (minimum) Front Axle; 996 - 105 mm (minimum) Rear Axle
- 997 - 77 mm (minimum) Front Axle; 997 - 115 mm (minimum) Rear Axle
- Measured “ready to drive” including driver
Fuel Cells - Stock fuel tank or Fuel Cell meeting FIA-FT3 specification or higher
- Must be at least the capacity as stock fuel tank (min 89 Liters)
- Dry break refueling connection permitted
- High pressure fuel pumps: Maximum of two
- Lift pumps inside fuel cell: Maximum of four
- Must be approved as to type, location and mounting of pumps
Fuel - All cars must run recommended Unleaded fuel supplied at the event

Fire Extinguisher - Required
- May be Porsche stock or approved equivalent
Windows - Front & rear windows must remain stock
- Side windows may be removed and replaced with window nets meeting the FIA specifications (FIA Art. 253.11) – Window nets are not required for the driver's side, so long as the factory Lexan window remains in place with no modifications
- Stock side vent may be modified but must be made of flexible material
- Rear side windows may be modified with air scoops
Seats and Belts Stock, or
Alternate belts must be 6 point belt meeting current FIA or SFI certification and mounting
Seats: Currently approved FIA or SFI seats with approved mounting (FIA Sporting code Appendix J, Art. 253.16)
The floor of the car must not be modified in any way and the original mounting holes must be used in all cases
Stock seats are recommended
Towing Eyes Front and rear towing eyes supplied with the car must be properly mounted and marked
Steering Wheel - May be stock or changed so long as it is continuous and round
- Quick disconnect permitted
- Hub extensions permitted
Exhaust - Stock with no changes to interior of exhaust
- Additional mufflers may be required to meet local ordinances (per event supplemental regulations)
Brakes and Pads - Porsche stock calipers
- Porsche stock rotors (steel brakes only)
- Any brake pads are acceptable which are designed for Porsche 996 or 997 GT3 Cup cars
In-Car Cameras - Permitted, however:
- Competent Motorsport, LLC must approve camera and mounting which must be metallic and attached directly to roll cage
- Competent Motorsport, LLC has right to impound footage from competitor
- Camera equipment weight not included in minimum weight requirement
Pit to Car Radios - Permitted in all phases of competition
Weight - 996 GT3 Cup cars must have a minimum weight of car with driver, with required racing equipment of 2,725 lbs., at all times during event
- 997 GT3 Cup cars must have a minimum weight of car with driver, with required racing equipment of 2,705 lbs., at all times during event
- Any ballast must be carried in a ballast box constructed of steel with a minimum thickness of .100 and utilize the passenger seat mounts for anchoring. The box must fully enclose the ballast, which must also be secured inside the ballast box. This is the only authorized location for the ballast.
- No weight may be removed from the stock structure of the car and placed in the ballast box
Rear Wing - Must remain stock
- Original position of the adjustable rear wing may be changed but only within the given adjustment range
Body Work Must remain stock as supplied and specified in technical manual
Except where specified herein, no machining or welding permitted
